Friday the 13th (2009)
Short Review
Friday the 13th (2009) 20r4gpc

The film starts off with a flashback of sorts, which basically plays like the end of the original Friday the 13th. Kind of strange, right? Well, they are pretty much letting you know that yes, Pamela Voorhees killed a bunch of teens because they weren't paying attention as they screwed their brains out, while her son, Jason, was drowning. She was down to the last victim when the tables are turned and Pam's head is cut off with a machete. To no one's shock or surprise, Jason had survived and witnessed his mom's decapitation, picks up the machete that killed her, and the rest is history. Yes, Friday the 13th takes place in a time period that is really more like Friday the 13th: Part 2 but is part of it's own continuity.

When a group of twenty-somethings head off to find a patch of marijuana plants hidden a short distance from Crystal Lake, they camp out, get naked, drunk, high, and the usual, and well, die. Yes, Jason kills a lot of them, and it's great. Honestly, who cares about the story at this point, Jason is in top form, kicking ass, slicing and dicing, and painting the big screen canvas with arterial art. One of these brutalities is a girl being tied up in a sleeping bag over a fire. Very nice and cruel. Right off the bat you get the feeling that this Jason isn't quite the lumbering behemoth of old, and you're right. This Jason is one big crafty mother f*cker.

The story continues as the brother of one of the druggy campers, Clay (Jared Padalecki), is out on the hunt for his sister and bumps into a group of other twenty-somethings that are going to weekend retreat by the woods. Some signals are crossed, people don't like each other, and Clay continues searching. Eventually he finds lots of weird hicks, which is odd for New Jersey. We don't really have many of those. Anyway, hours pass and he gets to a house that turns out to be the same house that the partiers were going to. He gets more gruff and takes one of the girls away with him. That's how you do it!

The ending of the film goes as expected, but in a good way. They pay a decent homage to the original film and manage to get this series back on track for future sequels to come. It's not a cerebral film by any means, but some of the new traits of Jason are pretty clever. Sure, there is a ton of stupid dialogue, inane plot devices, and characters you couldn't give a sh*t about, but those are all horror movie trappings that we've come to terms with for over 20 years. The pluses of this film have definitely outweighed the minuses and I can't wait to see what they do next. In the end, Jason comes off as a modern day Frankenstein's monster, being a creature that is motiviated and driven by the sins of his mother. Revenge can taint a soul, and you understand this as you feel a little bit sympathetic for him while he deals with his mommy issues. Anyhow, Go see it, bring a date, and hope the sound system is pumping. It will make it that much better.

The movie is okay guys. ^_^
Better watch it. Hehehe.
